Farther than Them All
Farther than Them All
-iliana pagán-teitelbaum
She never ventures from her house
I will tell you why
It happened like this:
One day She got in the car
and drove to her best friend’s
new house on a steep urban hill
She parked her car
and arrived laden with food
for the first pandemic meal
she would ever have
with three women friends
(it was already May 2022)
The last of all meals
with friends in the world outside
that She ever had
It was to be an outdoor affair
Alas, destiny set the table indoors
where covid spread silently
from breath to lungs
And her mask broke
And the women laughed
at her fears and grudgingly
opened windows on opposite
sides of the house
But, alas, this effort at ventilation
was not enough
and all fell ill
and no one knew it would
happen this way
until that single cough
at the end of a long evening
by her best friend
and before leaving
to never return
She told her friend
“You have covid”
and She went home and
quarantined forever
so her kids and husband
were safe but She went to
emergency room
then doctors and more
doctors and specialists
for years
And her friends said
“Let’s not talk again until
all are healthy”
And her best friend ghosted her
And She died a few times
but kept surviving
She got good at surviving
over and over again
until her life was made of light
and the grief of the losses
slowly burned away
like wet wood in a fire
hissing smoke that
made her eyes smart
and her lungs choke
until the air cleared
and she emerged from
darkness
The world was gone
Or she was gone from the
world
But she made her room
a hermitage
She found the way
to thrive in bedspace
And she lived on
Even though She never
left her room again She
journeyed farther
than them all

oscuridad
El mundo había desaparecido
O ella había desaparecido del
mundo
Pero convirtió su habitación
en una ermita
Encontró la manera
de prosperar en el espaciocama
Y siguió viviendo
Aunque Ella nunca
volvió a salir de su cuarto
viajó más allá
que todas las demás
